Instead of September Newsletter: All, 1) There is no September meeting next Tuesday (lack of water, lack of interest, Labor Day weekend) 2) Gary (editor) is changing his ISP and email address, and he/we had some problems with lost messages -- that's why I am choosing this format and attaching some previous clips (w/o much editing, sorry). - Horst 3) OCTOBER MEETING, Tue. Oct 2, 2001, 7:00 pm at the church "What does the Green Wall of the Illinois River look like at 150 cfs ? " ... well, its stillll prettty exciting ! Short slide presentation by Horst Lueck who ran the Wild & Scenic stretch of this beautiful river in South-West Oregon in late May. Since the remoteness of this run requires your ability to deal with any problem on the spot we will use this occasion to have a discussion about gear, emergency repairs, survival tips, etc. Everybody is encouraged to share her or his favorite Duct Tape story and bring related gear for demonstration. ############################################################ 4) BOOK TIP: Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2001 15:43:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Cascade Canoe Club To: Phil Backman Subject: reminder and book ... Here is the info about the book: ( a clip from Omar's article that got lost in Gary's email) "Horst brought me a copy of "Oregon's Coos Region: Canoe and Kayak Guide" by Ron Wardman. It lists trips from Eel Lake in the north to Floras Lake in the south. The author has trips on lakes, Coos Bay, many of the sloughs off Coos Bay, the Coquille River and other likely and unlikely places. It's written and laid out in a straight forward way with good descriptions of sights and hazards. " And here is where I got it (you'll may get a signed copy too ! ) McMullen House: 541 572 7857 Hwy42&Maryland Ave., Myrtle Point, OR 97458 (Harold & Maria Klusmeier - they may remember me) ############################################################ 5) BOATER-REG.ISTRATION FEED -- NOT ! Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 10:43:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Cascade Canoe Club To: ...editor Subject: for newsletter: boater-reg.istration feed -- NOT ! ... Reprint from Summer 2001 Newsletter, Willamette Kayak & Canoe Club, www.wkcc.org: Another Annoying Bill - by Mark Taratoot Not Bill The Cat. Not Bill Gates. Not even Billie Dee Williams. Some of you may have heard about a bill that was introduced into the state House of Representatives to require all boats to be registered. This would include kayaks and canoes. The fee would be small, but for folks who have several boats it might become a significant annual expense. Some states do require registration of paddlecraft, so there is precedent. We should all be pleased to know that HB 3483 died in the House Transportation Committee. They had one public hearing in April, and that was it. It didn't even make it far enough for a kayak lobby day at the state capitol. So continue paddling without fear you'll have to wear a number or write another check to the State Marine Board. For all of you who provided public comments, thanks for doing your part. See you on the river in your unregistered boat! Mark, thanks for keeping us informed -- Horst ############################################################ 6) REQUEST BY THE SAME 'Mark': Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 16:14:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Mark Taratoot To: white-water@peak.org Subject: Boat request Hey y'all. As many of you know, I am organizing an educational float trip on the Willamette River on September 15. In addition to being lead by the City of Corvallis, this trip is going to be a WKCC trip, so all normal WKCC rules apply. The Marys River Watershed Coucnil is also a partner. Registration materials are now at Peak Sports and the Corvallis Public Library. Early in the planning process, Peak Sports offered to secure their Wenonah Canoe rep to provide a passel of canoes for participants as well as help running shuttle. To make a long story shorter, this has fallen through as the trip date looms near. Peak sports has a grand total of three canoes that they rent out. OSU Rec Sports has a few boats (canoes, kayaks, and rafts), but they can only be rented by OSU students. My understanding is that Whitewater Warehouse does not rent canoes. Faced with a sudden lack of boats for this trip, I am humbly asking for some help from the club and/or others on this list. If you have an extra canoe (preferably plastic or aluminum as it's less likely to be damaged) please consider lending it out for this trip. Yes, of course we'll also need paddles, PFDs, and whistles. I'll be lending out my canoe, and the Willamette Riverkeepers have allowed me to lend out their Coleman. If you are planning on joining this trip and have room in your canoe for an additional paddler and/or passenger, please let me know; we may need the space. If you know anyone else who has a durable canoe, please pass this message along. Feel free to call me at work (766-6916) or e-mail me if you need to get in touch or have a boat we could use. We are also looking for a couple more safety boaters if you or someone you know would like to kayak along for safety. Thanks so much for your help. -m -- Mark Taratoot taratoot@peak.org ############################################################ 7) FROM THE COASTAL KAYAKERS: Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 21:55:48 -0700 From: Omar To: canoe@efn.org Subject: FW: Coastal Kayakers upcoming paddles Horst, this would go good on our website. See you soon i hope. Omar ... ------------------------------------------------------- Hi everyone - - The following are some upcoming paddles for the next few weeks. Three of these are ones we have done before and Eel Lake is a new group paddle. There are a lot of names in my e-mail address book that I would like to be able to match faces with, so come on - - let's paddle!! See you soon. Alan SEPTEMBER 2ND - SUNDAY EVENING - - SUNSET - MOONRISE - PADDLE - - SILTCOOS LAKE. We will meet at Westlake Boat Landing and launch at 6:00 p.m. Previously, on August 4th, we paddled over to the train trestle on the east shore of the lake to watch the sunset. Then, after we paddled back to Westlake, we were able to see the full moon rising over the mountains in the east. Bring a headlamp or a small light-weight flashlight to attach to your life jacket. SEPTEMBER 8TH - SATURDAY MORNING - - EEL LAKE PADDLE. We will meet at Eel Lake within Tugman State Park, which is between Lakeside and Reedsport. Launch time will be 9:00 a.m. from the public boat ramp. We can paddle up and back the West Arm and, for those of us who wish to paddle further, we can continue up and back the East Arm. This is a very beautiful lake to paddle on and has many quiet coves with ospreys, cormorants, ducks and other birds. There's an interesting area at the upper end of the West Arm where the remains of old logging trestles cut the corner of the lake. Cameras will surely be indispensable so don't forget to bring one along. SEPTEMBER 15TH - SATURDAY MORNING - - DRIFT CREEK PADDLE. We will be meeting at 9:00 A.M. at the Drift Creek Landing near Waldport. This is located approximately 4 miles east of Waldport on Highway 34. There is a sign on the left (North) side of the Highway at the entrance to Drift Creek Landing RV Park. Just drive through the Park and down to the boat dock. We plan to launch at 9:15 A.M. so that we can take advantage of the incoming high tide for the first part of our trip. There is a small $2.50 fee for launching our kayaks and there are restrooms at the launch site. There is a sandy beach at our destination near a waterfall and another grassy area above that with two giant spruce trees. This should make a great place to have our lunch before heading back downstream using the outgoing tide to assist our return to the original starting point at the Drift Creek Landing. We originally did this trip on May 5th and there were nine of us on the approximately five hour paddle (which included a stop for lunch at the waterfall) and the word "beautiful" was repeated many, many times during and after the trip. SEPTEMBER 22ND, SATURDAY MORNING - - BEAVER CREEK PADDLE. This will be a 3 to 4 hour paddle and we will meet at 9:00 A.M. in the parking lot at Ona Beach State Park, which is located just past Seal Rock off Highway 101. This location is approximately 40 miles North of Florence. This should be a rather easy paddle except for possible strong winds on portions of the creek during the return trip. We should get back to Ona Beach near 1:00 P.M. which would be a good time to have lunch at one of the many picnic tables in the park before we leave for home. We previously did this paddle on June 16th and again on June 21st, with 8 and 9 participants respectively. Let's get out on the water and celebrate the first day of Autumn!! ############################################################ 8) WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WATER FIGHT: Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 22:47:47 -0700 From: Joseph Neill To: canoe@efn.org Subject: World Cahpionship Water Fight World Championship Water Fight Aye mates, gather'roud and bring yer long boat, launch, canoe, raft kayak or any people-powered vessel to downtown Coos Bay Oregon during the 3rd weekend of September at fifteen hundred hours (09-15-01 at 3:00P.M.).
